Our Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) Strategy

We are an ESG-driven service leader.

Our purpose is to make a tangible difference to our customers and the communities we serve, creating better places, better lives. To achieve this we have developed a comprehensive ESG strategy which is deeply embedded in the way we do business and deliver services, to achieve sustainable impact.

Our Environmental, Social and Governance Strategy

We know how important this is to our clients too, with over 85% of our clients stating that ESG is important in both procurement and service delivery and rating us highly on this.

We measure our success through SMART goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound, and we embrace the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint for our strategy. We also use the Central Government’s TOMs Mapping Tool – covering themes, outcomes, and measures – as a framework for our social value strategy.

We commit to reducing our carbon footprint with appropriate measures in place to reduce consumption. Some of the many steps we have taken include:

  • Supporting and improving our client environments by focusing on innovation to create more sustainable solutions, increase productivity and output.
  • Using our innovation forum to search for continuous improvements to enhance the environments we support.
  • 100% technologically optimised journey scheduling, reducing fleet mileage and fuel consumption
  • 90% driver efficiency across vehicle fleet targeted for the financial year 2023, with monthly monitoring via our telemetry and training relating to responsible driving
  • Reduction of energy consumption and water usage at our head office.
  • Encouraging biodiversity on all our housing association grounds contracts using 100% native plants.
  • Continuous improvements to enhance the environments we support, promoted through our innovation forum and regular dissemination of the group’s findings.
  • Reducing fuel consumption by 10% more than the previous year and investing in new vehicles to help achieve this, including assessing the viability of an electric fleet.
  • Reducing waste to landfill from our bulk waste business stream and maintaining this to under 0.01% through recycling and upcycling alternatives. Reviewing these statistics with our recycling supply partners on a quarterly basis.
  • Regularly reviewing our gas and electricity suppliers to ensure we are supported by the most environmentally friendly partners.
  • Regularly reviewing and implementing more environmentally friendly lighting and heating solutions at our head office.

We commit to creating opportunities within the community for people to thrive by making a meaningful difference. Some practical examples we have taken include:

  • Championing the Living Wage as a Living Wage Recognised Service Provider, offering clients the opportunity to implement the Living Wage in their contracts.
  • Supporting our chosen charities, which in 2023 are Demelza House and The Ukrainian Appeal, throughout the year.
  • Actively seeking to reduce unemployment by offering opportunities to underrepresented groups.
  • Developing the skills of our communities by creating eight apprenticeships throughout the year.
  • Ensuring cultural alignment with partners and suppliers, preferring to work with those who share consistent values and ethics.
